Male Gaze theory and Female Gaze Theory
"To gaze implies more than to look at . It signifies a psychological relationship of power, inwhihc the gazer is superior to that object of the gaze."Jonathan Schroeder (1998)
In this media industry there is a lot of male gaze. You might be wondering what male gaze, it is the act of depicting woman and the world, in the world, in Visual Arts and Literature form a masculine, heterosexual perspective that represents woman as sexual objects for the pleasure of the male viewer.
The theory suggests that the male gaze denies women human identity, relegating them to the status of objects to be admired for physical appearance. The theory also suggest that woman can more often than not only watch a film form a secondary perspective and only view themselves form a mans perspective. The presence of a woman in mainstream media texts is something that is vital. Often a female character has no real importance herself. It is how she makes the male character feel or act that is the important. Male is present in all media platforms, from movie to series to music videos.
So what is the role of women in a narrative, an object for the characters within the narrative to view. As an erotic object for the spectators within the cinema to view. Hence, the character that look at others are seen as the active role (male). The characters that are to be looked at are passive (female). They are under control of the males gaze and only exist for visual pleasure. Females often slow the narrative down, they act as inspiration for men to act. Males on the other hand, push the narrative forwards and make things happen.
